Topic: Emerging Practice: Weight Stigma and Anti-Fat Bias in Healthcare
Speaker: Olivia Montgomery is a clinical social worker, trauma therapist, and fat liberationist living in Salem, Massachusetts. She is the owner and founder of Boundless Body Collective: Health and Community Center - a primary care office designed specifically to meet the needs of larger bodied/fat patients without harmful weight stigma.
Learning Objectives:
1. to have a better understanding of what is weight bias
2. to have a better understanding of what is “fatphobia” and how it originated
3. to have a better understanding of and to discuss the harmful myths surrounding weight bias and “the obesity epidemic”
4. to discuss our own biases, and how these can affect ourselves and our OT practice
5. to discuss the emerging practice of weight bias, and what as OT’s we can do to improve the care we provide
